Ligament Repair
What happens during ligament repair surgery?
The surgeon will first harvest a tendon graft from a donor or another part of the body, such as the hamstring or patellar tendon (the tendon that connects the kneecap). This graft will be attached to the torn ligament and surgically secured with screws or staples. You’ll wear a sterile dressing or bandage after surgery. During recovery, it may take several weeks to resume normal activities and physical therapy is often prescribed.
Preparing for surgery
We recommend informing your primary care provider about this upcoming surgery to discuss any medication changes you’ll need to make leading up to the procedure. You’ll be asked to fast for several hours before the procedure and refrain from taking certain medications such as aspirin. The surgery team will ensure you’re well-informed with recovery instructions and options to manage pain.
